Yes, I filmed these clips with the intention to document the progression of my postpartum BODYODYODY… But when I watched the clips put together I saw something VERY different. I saw the progression of my postpartum mental health. With my history of depression and anxiety I knew I needed to be aware that PPD was a possibility for me. BUT, before I left the hospital, I was given a PPD questionnaire and I remember thinking “Wow! I passed that with flying colors! I have nothing to worry about!” And then, just about 48 hours later I was hit with a seriously scary darkness. I suddenly didn’t want to be alive. I didn’t see the point. Everything seemed too hard and like it was never going to get any better. I really thought I’d made a huge mistake becoming a mother and that I’d ruined my life. I couldn’t eat. I couldn’t wash myself. Brushing my teeth felt like moving through sludge. It got SO DARK, SO FAST. By Day 5 postpartum I was in a doctor’s office sobbing, feeling like an absolute failure, consumed with guilt and paranoia. I’d been anti-medication since I got myself off meds over a decade ago and was being torn apart about accepting that I needed medical intervention for my mental state and STAT. Finally, after much battling myself, I made the decision to take the z🤍loft and I’m so SO glad I did. It snapped me back to my wonderful reality within days. I was able to begin to see the joy in motherhood and feel the gratitude for this beautiful life change. I began to feel in control of my body and mind again and SMILE. I still couldn’t eat because, as we were to find out another week later, my gallbladder had gone sour, but that’s a whole nother story for a whole nother day. Soon, I will begin weaning off the meds as I never wanted to have to take them long term, but I don’t regret taking them for a second. I am absolutely obsessed with my baby and my new life now. I wouldn’t have it any other way. All this to say, the hormonal drop after birth is something you really can’t understand until you go through it. Don’t judge yourself.
